A sad goodbye all too soon.....

Jos and I have been searching for a new kitten lately. The loss of Dagi was hard for us but we have so much love to share with another kitty. In May, I saw the photo below that a breeder posted online. Meet Elwin...a red oriental short hair. He was adorable and it was love at first sight. We arranged to bring him home the day after we returned from a week's vacation in May.

The big day arrived and we drove the hour to pick up Elwin. His brother Joep climbed up on my lap and looked at me as if to say "You are not going to take Elwin and leave me here, are you?". So Joep came home to live with us too.
It quickly became apparent that Joep needed a man's strong guiding hand. I was not able to cope with his and he was constantly playing so hard with Elwin that it left Elwin with scabbed scratches. We made the difficult decision after a vet looked at Joep and said his aggression would probably not deminish as he became an adult cat. He was all personality so this was a hard decision to make but he was returned to the breeder.

Elwin was sad the first 24 hours and would not eat or drink. He was missing the breeder and his partner. But finally he turned around and he ate very well and followed us all over the house talking away wherever we went. He had the funniest meow which sounded like those friction wind up flash lights. He cuddled day and night. His favorite sleeping spot was laid over my should with his little sweet head on my chest. He went happily back and forth between Jos and I.

I am using past tense as this is not a story with a happy ending. Sunday he started to get lethargic and stopped eating.  He did still drink when we took him to his water. Monday morning, when I awoke he was laying between Jos and I and at first I though he had died. He was alive but breathing very badly. Then I saw his little belly looked strange. I knew it was serious and he was very ill.

We called the vet and she had us bring him in. His breathing was more and more distressed and the assistant let me wait with his in a well cooled room. The vet drew stomach fluid to test and came back with horrible news. Elwin had FIP. It is viral disease and was in his stomach and lungs. Cats cannot survive this illness. We had to make the decision to put down a beautiful kitten that was not even 4 months old yet yesterday. It seems so wrong that this little life has passed too soon. He should have had many years here with us.

Elwin is buried our under the bench in our garden. He is right next to Dagi where we can go and sit with them. I am totally heartbroken. I miss him so much even though he was such a short time in our home. He fit in! He was instantly part of the family.
Sweet dreams little Elwin out there with Dagi among the roses.........

A sad end to 2013.....

2013 has ended in an extremely sad note for Jos and I. Our precious Dagi had to be put to sleep yesterday. His birthday was the week before but he went quickly downhill and we had to make the difficult decision to take him to the vet. His eyes stayed bright to the end so this made it the hardest decision we have ever made. He is now resting in peace...buried in a spot in our garden which an online friend calls Susan´s Corner. We will miss him so very much and are totally heartbroken!

Love is.....

...letting your cat have the fan on him because he is too hot during a heatwave while you are melting away yourself. *grins*

"One of the oldest human needs is having someone to wonder where you are when you don't come home at night."

- Margaret Mead

Our sweet cat Adagio is still doing well even with the heat of our summer. He sleeps so much and eats less but then we eat less too when it is hot. He is not happy being alone anymore even just for a while so I try and stay with him as much as possible. We just feel so blessed that he is still with us and getting so old that we do not begrudge him this one little demand...all our time for his last years.

These are photos of Dagi back in our old house a few months before we moved. He is an indoor cat and will sit in the door opening without going out as he knows he is not allowed. This amazes most people that see it.

April snow-showers.....

At first, we opened the curtains on Easter Sunday and wondered if it was Christmas...

Enjoying breakfast while watching the snowflakes fall...

A light lunch taking a break...

...from painting the cottage. Jos was pretending to be a graffiti artist. We had a nice long weekend at the cottage and needed to get the room done. Next chance we get for a long weekend again will be used to paint the ceilings.

But Dagi spent his long Easter weekend doing what he does best...catnapping...

Easter dinner was light. We had carpaccio kababs with steamed broccoli and a green salad...

Back home and I was baking cookies as a surprise for Jos as it was our 26th wedding anniversary...

I tried a new recipe for these chocolate chip and walnut cookies. They are really good and I learned a few tricks to getting a more tasty cookie...

And back home.....Dagi is still catnapping but he says thanks for the sweet comments on the last post. Since he has grown old, he has started sleeping in very unusual ways. Sometimes his paws are hanging over the couch of him and sometimes he sleeps with them laying out in front of him.

It's a cat's life.....

...for me! Remember me? I am Dagi and this is my house. Sometimes my owners think it is theirs but I do little things to remind them who is boss. *Meow*

While my mommy is too busy doing things like baking...

...or sewing for Easter...

...or crocheting to keep herself warm against the cold wind still blowing...

...I am getting into trouble since she is not looking. I found this plant she placed in the window to get some sunlight and decided it might taste rather yummy. I changed my mind and spit it back out again.

Now I am very tired and just need to catch up on my beauty sleep. So please pardon me while I take a long catnap and have a very happy Easter weekend!

My best Christmas present ever!

My best Christmas present ever? Our beautiful old man cat Dagi (which is short for Adagio) of course. It is his birthday today. He made it to 15 years old! When we got him, our vet warned us that these kind of cats are wonderful characters but do not get old. We had him on a special diet food from 6 months old so he told us he was getting the best from a young age but still we expected to loose him between the ages of 6 to 8 years old. These cats simply have an ultra sensitive digestive system.

He has not been well but is showing us daily that he is happy regardless. Jos read up on old cats with eating problems and discovered that meat is the best for them to digest. So we gave it a try. I know he loves chicken and turkey. I bought him some chicken lunch meat. He LOVES it and has actually been getting ever so slightly stronger on it. He keeps it down well too.

He is old and has trouble jumping up and sleeps so deeply most of the day but he also still loves to hold a conversation with me regularly. This month was my quilt group's yearly Christmas party and you can see Dagi sitting in the middle of the busy group group of quilters listening intently. He is sitting next to a very dear friend Enny.

Happy birthday to my dear Dagi! We are so happy you made it to this wonderful old age. You are a sweet and dear companion to Jos and I!

It is Christmas Eve tomorrow so I wanted to take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! May your Christmas be a happy time together with the one(s) you love dearest.

There is a definite chill in the air.....

...and it makes me want to bake...like this new recipe for pumpkin gingerbread to have with our evening coffee...

...and change to our warmer winter quilt...

...oops!...I woke up Dagi who was sound asleep on my pillow...

...but the begonia plant in my bedroom window which I bought for its beautiful leaves seems to think it is spring as this is the first time it has bloomed since I bought it two years ago...

Have a great weekend and keep warm!

Counting down to Halloween.....

Halloween is coming near. I went for a Sunday morning walk in the woods which I will show you more of in my next post but I wanted to get some twigs for a Halloween tree...

Each year, when I put out these ornaments (most of which my mother made for me), I think of my sister as this was always her favorite holiday.

Dagi is trying out a funny face for Halloween. What do you think? Boo! *wink*

Enjoying the first signs of fall.....

We have been away enjoying the first signs of fall at Cranberry Cottage. We went up for a 10 day stay at the cottage...

It was wonderful and I really hated having to come back to the city. Everything has started smelling like autumn in the woods. There are signs of it starting like our white hydrangeas getting a tinge of pink to them. We enjoyed the cool evenings with the fireplace crackling. I spent many days with my crocheting and stitching. We treated ourselves to an evening out at our favorite restaurant but time passed all too quickly.

Jos needed time there as he had to get a start on painting as well as gardening. He is a master at trimming conifers and bushes. We have quite a few there that need yearly attention. And he does it all with hand trimmers too...no electric trimming for him! I am always in awe of how nicely he works.

Some people like to get away for vacation and be where they can do nothing. For us, it is most enjoyable in our second home. I don't mind still having my daily routine of cooking and cleaning. It is simply so peaceful to be at Cranberry Cottage.

Our little man Dagi was with us. He is showing his old age so much now and we are simply treasuring each moment we still have to enjoy his cuddles. He supervised my cleaning and decorating just a little for autumn.

I am now busy with my decorations in the house in the city. Come back soon for my autumn house tour.
